PRK does not involve the use of a microkeratome. A microkeratome (used in LASIK) creates a very thin flap of tissue with a very sharp blade. This flap of tissue is bent and the excimer laser is applied to the underlying tissues. After the underlying tissue redrafting the flap is pushed into place. This is why LASIK is less painful because there is minimal disruption to the surface of the cornea which is the sensitive part pain. In PRK the excimer laser is applied directly without the creation of a tissue flap. Thus, a larger area of the sensitive area of pain is altered and to new surface (epithelium) grows over the defect, the patient feels discomfort in his eyes. PRK generally saves more tissue. Thus, patients with thinner corneas THINNER generally better with PRK. I am sure that your doctor has good reason to recommend PRK over LASIK. Try asking him / her to explain further. Tell him about his apprehension about increased discomfort of PRK. Part our job as physicians is to explain to patients.

$2,000/office-$3,000/hospital around here…….varies from state to state and doctor to doctor. Call around and gets quotes but make sure they are reputable before allowing them to do this procedure. There are fly by nights that will set up a clinic in like a strip mall but they do not provide follow-up care and do not cover additional cares if needed. Our hospital allows for you to make payments of 100$ over a period of 2-3 yrs if you qualify which is helpful. You might want to check on this as an option in your area.
