The lasik eye surgery procedure itself is a fairly straightforward operation as far as operations go. You should not feel any pain, you are conscious the whole time and the whole process is completed very quickly. The following is a step by step general overview of the surgery. The process used by your surgeon or lasik center may differ slightly, but the overall experience described below is quite typical.

Prior to having the surgery, you will undergo a thorough eye examination where your eyes are measured, the overall health of your eyes is determined and your vision is tested. Your lasik surgeon will discuss the procedure with you in detail and give you an opportunity to ask any questions you have.
When you arrive for your surgery, tests will be conducted on the laser that will be used for the procedure to calibrate it and ensure its accuracy. The level of correction to be applied to your eye is set on the computer that controls the laser. It is the computer that determines how the laser will be applied during your surgery.
Once you are brought in for surgery and you lie down, eyedrops will be administered to numb the eye that will be operated on. An eyepatch will be placed over your other eye. A speculum will be put in place to keep your eye open during the procedure. All of this is painless and no additional anaesthetic is administered, though you may be given a mild sedative to help you relax or calm your nerves.
When the surgery is about to begin, you will be directed to focus on a small light that blinks intermittently. You will hear the clicking sound of the laser. As the lasik surgery procedure gets underway, the corneal flap, which is a thin layer of tissue, will be separated and lifted. The light you were told to look at will get fuzzy.
Once treatment is completed, more eyedrops will be placed in your eye. The procedure is then repeated for the second eye if you are having both eyes done, as most people do.
When both eyes have been treated, you will sit up and relax for a few minutes before you can head for home. The actual time the laser is applied is usually less than one minute per eye. People are often surprised at how little time vision correction surgery actually takes, but you should still plan on your visit taking at least an hour which includes prep time, any paperwork, discussions with your doctor and resting.
Even though this overview of the lasik surgery procedure makes the process seem simple, it is important to realize that it is not. There are several considerations that need to be accounted for such as risks, complications, recovery time, cost and more. If you are considering lasik, make sure you speak with your doctor at length and ask as many questions as you can in order to understand not just the procedure itself, but also all of the accompanying issues.
