The lasik flap does not form a permanent scarring bond with the cornea for a number of years. It is held in place by a water pump or "suction" that occurs in the cornea. The flap can be lifted rather easily with an eye instrument up to 3-4 years after surgery. The importance of this is: if you have an air bag accident or a corneal scratch from a makeup brush or fingernail or shrub in the yard, the flap must be examined by an ophthalmologist to make sure it is in the right location on the cornea.
