Keratoconus And Lasik
Lasek, who can benefit?
LASEK (Laser Epithelial Keratomileusis) is a hybrid of LASIK (Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis) and PRK (keratectomy photorefractive).
· Href = "http://www.davidorf.com/vc_custom_lasik_zyoptix.html">-LASIK a laser surgery procedure in which creating a flap in the surface layer of the cornea (called the epithelium) with a microkeratome blade, and after a computer-controlled excimer laser is used to reshape the underlying cornea. The flap is then replaced and heals by itself, protect the treated area underneath.
· PRK surgery, a procedure laser instead of creating a corneal flap, the surgeon removes part of the corneal surface open slightly scraped. Then the computer-controlled excimer laser reshapes the underlying cornea, with LASIK. Because the surface cells were eliminated, they must grow back, so recovery time is slightly long.
· LASEK-a laser surgery procedure in which the corneal epithelium is cut very shallow, with a road drill, which is thinner than the blade microkeratome used in LASIK. The epithelium is treated with alcohol to loosen and separate from the rest of corneal tissue. This creates a very thin flap is then reversed and the laser computer-controlled excimer is used to reshape the underlying cornea. As with LASIK, the little flap heals itself.
One of the advantages of LASEK compared with PRK is that people feel more comfortable after the operation. LASEK can be performed on both eyes the same day or one at a time.
LASEK (and PRK) are called surface ablation procedures. This is due to the corneal surface ablation (surgical removal, melted or vaporized) using a laser. With surface ablation, the same laser used in LASIK can be used to sculpt the cornea and the visual results are equivalent.
Good candidates for LASEK
The best candidates for LASEK are myopic (nearsighted) people with corneas that are too thin to tolerate LASIK surgery traditional. Since LASEK removes less corneal tissue, there is no danger of cutting the flap too deeply, as there would be if it were the traditional LASIK.
In addition, people who play sports or have jobs with high risk of eye injury may be better candidates for LASEK, because a thin flap cause less damage to your eyesight, if your eyes are injured before they are completely healed.
Some people may be candidates for LASEK who are not candidates for LASIK. These initial candidates include people with:
· Dry eyes
· Glaucoma
· Dilated pupils
· Reason corneal thickness, though small optical zones
• Very flat or steep corneas
If you have any of these conditions, you may be an ideal candidate for LASEK a procedure with a result equivalent to LASIK. Dr. Jonathan Davidorf in West Hills, California has an informative page website where you can read more about LASIK and its alternatives.
Recovery
LASEK has the same expectations of recovery for LASIK. The main differences are that the flap created in LASEK cure in about a day. For about four days, LASEK people usually use a special contact lens that acts like a bandage, adding more protection to the treated area and the flap was made extra-fine. Some people You may feel eye irritation during the first few days after surgery.
LASIK people can achieve good vision in only a few days while after LASEK may take a few days to a week. Most people return to LASEK surgeon the next day for evaluation, and then after a week and after three months for follow up visits.
LASEK may be an option if you have not previously been a candidate for LASIK traditional. It's another way to obtain the vision correction laser so you can enjoy the benefits of reducing or eliminating dependence on glasses or contacts.
